A granth is the holy book of Sikhs. The Gurus created it, and it presents a highly organized account of Sikh philosophy. It also tells the story of how the Gurus came to deliver messages for their people. The Granth Sahib was compiled by Guru Arjan Dev after he had spent years in meditation. Today, there are many versions of this religious text, but they all make Taar (preaching) available for all Sikhs who seek divine help. There's no denying that this book influenced different people to introduce many social reforms across India, including ending slavery and caste discrimination. Thus, some historians believe that this holy book is the main reason why some South Asian religions are modern today. It had a great influence on the Indian independence movement. The Granth Sahib is one of the most respected books in Sikhism. The Granth Sahib is also regarded as one of the most accurate accounts of Sikh history. As per the preface by Vishnu Puri, there are five stages through which an average reader will pass before he can fully comprehend its contents: These five elements are common to every book that deals with human relationships; they exist in every society; and they can be eliminated only by reformation of social structure. The Granth Sahib is the basis of Sikhs spiritual life. It is considered as the scripture of Sikhs. The study of the Granth consists of four parts: Sikhism is a religion that revives and explores the religious values found in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The main similarities between Sikhism and these three religions are their reverential attitude to sacred texts; their emphasis on humanitarian values; their philosophy of living by example; their advocacy for social reform; and belief in the equality of all human beings. The word “Granth” means "book" in Punjabi (Punjabi: ਗ੍ਰੰਥ). The Granth contains 1430 pages, but has no pagination. It is divided into 38 "Ragas" (or "Chapters") containing approximately 53000 verses which were composed by the Sikh Gurus. Some of these are included in the Guru Granth Sahib are as follows: The structure of the hymns of the Granth is remarkable because they are written in more or less meter form, which means that every second line has exactly the same number of syllables as every other line. Also all lines have ten syllables per line on average, with very few exceptions which occur only once or twice throughout the whole hymn. This structure has been defined in the Sikh tradition as having a “four and a half beat rhythm.” Another difference from most Hindu texts is the absence of rhyme. The Sikh texts are also unique among the sacred writings of the world in that they do not talk about God in anthropomorphic terms, but rather use abstract concepts to describe the Divine Reality. The word “Gurmukhi” means literally "from mouth of a Guru" or it may be translated as "script of a Guru," or, more simply, "Guru's script. cfa1e77820
